This book has many rave reviews. I mean serious rave reviews I wanted to love the book, and as I did read it, going into it, the first 5 chapters, Part 1, The Student, I loved. Understood and could follow. Then, for me, it started getting difficult for me to understand and I’m not sure if it was difficult, or I just didn’t like the book. I am very ADD and when I read the book, I was thoroughly confused. What irks me about all of this, is even though this is a fictional book about an advocate who his first trial,
Altered the course of history and his last, will change the fate of an empire. (Direct quote from the back cover)
Okay about the book. I made it to chapter 25 before I just couldn’t understand anymore about where I was in the story, or who the majority of the players were.
Now I got to the part where Christ was presented before Pilate after his night of being found guilty by Herod.
For me, I was not going to finish the book and knew this after about 5 chapters. I tried to go further into the book but just couldn’t. However, please do NOT let this deter you from the book. Regardless of my review, for a normal reader that loves Christian Historical Fiction, this book should be a great read. One that touches your heart and one that just draws you in from the get-go.
Had I had a map, something in writing with the characters and how they’re related (there was a list in the front of the book, for me it wasn’t enough. Enjoy this book, know that it has huge responses and has extreme rave reviews.
The author has a study guide and a 4 week course on his website.
Since I can’t review the book, here is the description of the book and the details
Follow what law and legal representation was like in biblical times with Randy Singer’s Christian historical fiction Advocate: He Defied an Empire & Inspired a Faith.
At the trial of Christ, Theophilus, brilliant young “assessore” raised in the Roman aristocracy, stands behind Pontius Pilate and whispers, “Offer to release Barabbas.” The strategy backfires, and Theophilus never forgets the sight of an innocent man unjustly suffering the worst of all possible deaths–Roman crucifixion.
Three decades later, Theophilus has proven himself in the legal ranks of the Roman Empire. He has survived the insane rule of Caligula and has weathered the cruel tyrant’s quest to control the woman he loves. He has endured the mindless violence of the gladiator games and the backstabbing intrigue of the treason trials.
Now he must face another evil Caesar, defending the man Paul in Nero’s deranged court. Can Theophilus mount a defense that will keep another innocent man from execution? The advocate’s first trial altered the course of history. His last will change the fate of an empire.
